Introducing three contractors who have stood out to New England Forestry employees for their efforts to make their working conditions as safe as possible.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Actively pursuing \u201cSafety as a Way of Life\u201d is one of our core values at New England Forestry, not only for our own employees, but for the 100s of small, local-owned businesses we work with every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One way we recognize the great work our colleagues are doing to create a safer workplace is a monthly recognition called the Safety Star. This program recognizes contractors who are making contributions to improve the safety culture within their business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are three recent honorees who were recognized by the\nNew England Forestry team:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dillon Stratton, 3D\nTrucking, Lake City, FL<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dillon Stratton<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Dillon was recognized for the innovative camera and driver\nalert system he uses on log trucks for his company. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt costs more money to do the right thing, but we take care\nof our equipment because our employees are like family,\u201d he says. \u201cSome of them\nhave been with me for more than 20 years. You can replace or fix a tractor\nthat\u2019s been in an accident. You can\u2019t replace someone\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each of Dillon\u2019s rigs has a camera facing out through the\nwindshield and one looking back down each side of the truck. This helps keep\nhis truckers protected in case of an accident. In addition to taking video, the\nsystem records issues such as hard braking and speeding, which Dillon uses to\ncoach his employees on safe driving techniques. He encourages his drivers to be\nactive with Team Safe Trucking by awarding them a financial incentive for each\nclass they complete. (Team Safe Trucking is an online driver training program\ndesigned for the logging industry.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dave Dilley, Dilley\nand Soloman, Forks, WA<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dave was nominated for his continued efforts to invest in\nnew, safer logging technology for his company, Dilley & Soloman Logging Co.,\nwhich began operations in 1987.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prior to forming Dilley & Soloman, Dave ran his uncle\u2019s small logging business for 10 years. Some of Dave\u2019s employees have been with him since those early days, making them more like family than employees. Dave says, \u201cA lot of our people have been with us for a long time. I want all of our employees to go home at night and be in one piece.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

About six years ago, he started investing in new logging\ntechnology. (Watch\nour video of him demonstrating winch-assisted logging here<\/a>.) He was a\nlittle hesitant at first, but says that when he attended a steep slope logging\nconference, his eyes were opened and he bought in completely. Since then he has\ncontinued to add new technology and make other changes, such as hiring a safety\nofficer, that enhance the safety of his business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kim Nettles,\nTrue2Shine, Wildlight, FL<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As the\nDay Porter for New England Forestry\u2019s Wildlight office, Kim, who works for True2Shine, is\nalways on hand to clean up a spill or remove boxes and trash to keep walkways\nhazard-free. Not only does she keep things clean, but she also maintains the\njanitorial safety data sheets (SDS), keeps the safety closet organized, and\ngoes above and beyond. She is always ready to help team-lift heavy packages and\nassists in packing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) shipments to send out to\nNew England Forestry offices across the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kim loves being in the office and\nis dedicated to doing whatever she can to keep folks safe. When the worksite at\na prior job wasn\u2019t being properly maintained, a coworker was injured and Kim\nsaw firsthand how keeping things clean and organized is critical for helping\neveryone stay safe. She says, \u201cMy job is easier when I do it in a safe\nmanner\u2014and when everyone else does their job in a safe manner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Continuing to Improve Safety Across the Industry<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re proud of each of our Safety Star recipients for their\nleadership and initiative. We also recognize New England Forestry employees each month for\ntheir safety efforts in an internal Safety Star program, which we highlight\nfrom time to time on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that\u2019s just one aspect of the way New England Forestry is working\ntoward a safer workplace, not only within our forests, but across our industry.\nWe also have a safety app that allows users to look up industry safety\nguidelines for equipment and materials while working. They can also report\nnear-miss incidents, which can be used as a teachable moment for their peers.\nIn addition, in\n2022 New England Forestry hosted safety training seminars across the U.S. for more than 650\ncontractors<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
